But it is also possible for the look to be returned and submitted to a critique by a woman, as may be illustrated from a pair of poems written early in the sixteenth century by Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey. Surrey is conspicuously a poet of male chivalry and friendship, but he also composed several poems in the persons of women, showing remarkable empathy with the situations and feelings of their imagined speakers. The first of this pair is spoken by a man: Wrapt in my carelesse cloke, as I walke to and fro, I se how love can shew what force there reigneth in his bow; And how he shoteth eke, a hardy hart to wound; And where he glanceth by agayne, that litle hurt is found.

The woman is seen as 'feeding' the man (10, 17), as if she were the all-powerful mother, whose refusal to grant full satisfaction to the son's longing can only be construed as malice. She lays them by to bathe, and then, when Actaeon's presence is made known by her nymphs' ululations and their attempts to conceal her body, wishes that she had not done so: 'vellet promptas habuisse sagittas' (188) [she would fain have had her arrows ready]. At this moment she returns Actaeon's look, with an obliquity that momentarily suggests feminine coyness: 'in latus obliquum .
